Beyond the multiplexes, Delhi has a strong culture of free and low-cost screenings. India Habitat Centre and the India International Centre on Lodhi Road run regular film-club shows, documentaries and director retrospectives, often followed by a discussion. Cultural institutes such as Alliance Française de Delhi on Lodi Estate and other embassy-linked centres screen world cinema, frequently with English subtitles. Through the year, film festivals take over these venues, from documentary and short-film festivals to national-cinema weeks. In the cooler months, outdoor movie nights pop up on rooftops, lawns and in malls in Gurgaon and Noida, and themed anime and cult-classic nights run in cafés.
