Christmas 2026 in Delhi: Midnight Mass, Markets and Brunches

Updated 2026-10-04 · 7 min read · by the delhi2go team

Christmas 2026 in Delhi falls on Friday, 25 December, a gazetted holiday, which makes it a three-day weekend for most people. For midnight mass, Sacred Heart Cathedral near Gole Dak Khana is the big one: arrive at least an hour early. The Cathedral Church of the Redemption and St James’ Church at Kashmere Gate are the historic alternatives. Christmas décor is usually up in Khan Market, CP and the big malls from early December, and festive brunches across the city fill up fast.

Where to attend midnight mass in Delhi

Exact service times are announced by each parish in December, so check the church’s notice board or social media the week before. Here are the churches most Delhiites head to:

Church Where Why go Nearest metro
Sacred Heart Cathedral Ashok Place, Bhai Vir Singh Marg, near Gole Dak Khana Delhi’s Roman Catholic cathedral and the city’s best-known midnight mass Patel Chowk (Yellow), RK Ashram Marg (Blue)
Cathedral Church of the Redemption Church Road, near Parliament and North Block A 1920s–30s Church of North India cathedral modelled on Palladio’s Il Redentore; known as the “Viceroy Church” Central Secretariat (Yellow/Violet), then an auto
St James’ Church Lothian Road, Kashmere Gate Delhi’s grand 1836 church, built by Colonel James Skinner, with original European stained glass Kashmere Gate (Red/Yellow/Violet)

Sacred Heart Cathedral

Built between 1930 and 1935 to a design by Henry Medd, Sacred Heart is the seat of the Archdiocese of Delhi. It has a white-pillared Italianate façade, a vast curved roof and a Last Supper fresco in the apse. Masses here are held in English, Hindi and Malayalam. On Christmas Eve, the cathedral and its grounds, which it shares with St Columba’s School and the Convent of Jesus and Mary, fill with families, carol singers and visitors of every faith.

Tips: arrive 60–90 minutes before the service you want. Carry as little as possible, as security checks are standard. If you can’t get inside, the grounds are still festive. Parking around Gole Dak Khana is extremely limited, so take the metro or a cab.

Cathedral Church of the Redemption

Henry Medd designed this one too. It was built between 1927 and 1931 near Rashtrapati Bhavan and Parliament, which is why it’s called the “Viceroy Church”. The cool, high-arched interior and its 1931 organ make the Christmas services, especially the carols, very atmospheric. Security around the central government district is tight, so carry ID.

St James’ Church, Kashmere Gate

Consecrated in 1836 and among the oldest churches in Delhi, St James’ was built by Colonel James Skinner at his own expense. Its cross-shaped plan has a central octagonal dome that recalls Florence Cathedral’s. Even outside Christmas it’s worth a visit for the stained glass and the graves of Skinner and other early-19th-century Delhi figures. Combine it with an Old Delhi walk on the Christmas weekend.

Christmas markets, carnivals and décor

Delhi doesn’t have a single official Christmas market, but the season brings plenty of pop-ups:

  • Malls: Select Citywalk in Saket, the Vasant Kunj malls, Ambience, DLF Mall of India in Noida and Pacific Mall usually put up giant trees, Santa grottos, carollers and kids’ workshops from early December.
  • Khan Market and Connaught Place: strings of lights, decorated shopfronts and cafés with Christmas menus. They’re lovely for an evening walk in Connaught Place followed by hot chocolate.
  • DLF CyberHub: CyberHub is usually decked out with lights and Christmas installations, and the restaurants run festive set menus.
  • Church and school carnivals: many parishes and Christian schools hold Christmas fairs and fêtes in December, with food stalls, games, white-elephant tables and cakes. They’re often the best value of the season.
  • Craft and flea markets: December is peak season for weekend pop-up markets selling ornaments, candles, gifts and baked goods. See our flea markets hub.

We list confirmed Christmas markets, carol evenings and Santa events on our Christmas events hub as organisers announce them.

Christmas cakes and bakeries

Delhi takes its plum cake seriously. Wenger’s in Connaught Place’s A Block, baking since 1926 and in CP since the early 1930s, sees queues for its Christmas cakes in the last week before the 25th. Go on a weekday morning, or order ahead. Neighbourhood bakeries across the city run pre-order lists for plum cakes, stollen and Christmas cookies from early December, and some Malayali and Goan home bakers sell traditional fruit cakes through Instagram. Order by mid-December, because many close orders well before Christmas Eve.

Christmas brunches and dinners

Christmas Day brunch is a Delhi tradition, especially at the five-star hotels around Aerocity, central Delhi and Gurgaon. Expect roast turkey or chicken, carving stations, mulled wine, plum pudding and a kids’ corner. Smaller restaurants in Khan Market, Meherchand Market, Hauz Khas and Gurgaon’s Galleria area do set Christmas menus.

  • Book early. The best tables for 25 December usually go by mid-December.
  • Ask what’s included, such as alcohol, kids’ pricing and the time slot. Many hotels run two seatings.
  • Cheaper option: Christmas Eve dinner or a brunch on Saturday the 26th is usually easier to book than the 25th.

A Christmas Eve plan for central Delhi

If you want one evening that covers the lot, this route keeps you within a few metro stops and short walks:

  1. Around 4 pm: cake run. Start at Wenger’s in CP’s A Block before the evening queue builds. Pick up a plum cake, or something for the morning.
  2. Around 5:30 pm: lights. Walk the CP circles and Janpath as the decorations come on. Grab a hot chocolate or coffee on the way.
  3. Around 7:30 pm: early dinner. Eat in CP or near Gole Market, because restaurants near the cathedral fill up fast on the 24th.
  4. Around 9:30–10 pm: carols. Head to Sacred Heart Cathedral, a 15–20 minute walk from the inner circle, to catch carols and find a spot before the late service.
  5. After the service: have a cab booked, or a driver waiting at a set point outside the Gole Dak Khana crush.

Check the cathedral’s 2026 service timings in December and shift the plan to fit. If you have small children, an earlier Christmas Eve service plus dinner is far easier than midnight.

Christmas shopping and gifts

For gifts, Khan Market has the best concentration of bookshops, homeware and gourmet stores in a small area. Dilli Haat suits handmade presents like shawls, pottery and brassware from across India, at fixed stall prices. Janpath is good for small, cheap stocking-fillers such as jewellery, bags and trinkets. Malls carry the Christmas decorations, advent calendars and party favours, and many neighbourhood bakeries take orders for gift boxes of cookies and cake. Our Diwali shopping markets guide has metro stations and closing days for most of these markets, and they work just as well for Christmas shopping.

Christmas with kids

  • Santa meet-and-greets and gingerbread or ornament-making workshops at malls and cafés. These usually happen on December weekends, and we list them on our kids and family events hub.
  • Carol evenings at churches and community halls, often free and open to all.
  • Nativity scenes (cribs) at Sacred Heart and many parish churches, which kids love.
  • Christmas plays and pantomimes at theatres and schools, which we list in our theatre listings as they’re announced.

Practical tips for Christmas in Delhi

  • Fog and cold: late December nights in Delhi drop into single digits Celsius, and dense fog is common in the second half of the month. Wrap up for midnight mass and allow extra time on the road.
  • Air quality: if AQI is “very poor” or worse, mask up for outdoor queues. Our indoor things to do guide has fallback plans.
  • Getting home after midnight mass: the metro’s last trains leave terminal stations at about 11 pm, so pre-book a cab or arrange a lift.
  • Long weekend traffic: with Christmas on a Friday, highways out of Delhi are likely to be busy on the evening of Thursday, 24 December. If you’re staying in town, the city will be pleasantly quieter.
