About India International Centre

The India International Centre (IIC) is one of Delhi's leading forums for ideas and the arts. Conceived in 1958 by S. Radhakrishnan and John D. Rockefeller III and set up under C.D. Deshmukh, it opened in 1962 on a 4.76-acre site beside Lodhi Gardens, in low-rise buildings designed by Joseph Allen Stein. An Annexe followed in 1996 and the Kamaladevi Complex for conferences in 2011. IIC runs lectures, seminars, book discussions, film screenings, exhibitions and concerts of Indian classical and Western music, including annual events such as the C.D. Deshmukh Memorial Lecture. Performances are usually held in the 230-seat C.D. Deshmukh Auditorium, while talks are spread across the main building, the Kamaladevi Complex and the Annexe. IIC is a members' institution, but it says most of its programmes are open to the public without tickets or invitations.

Tips before you go

  • Most programmes are free and need no ticket or invitation; check the current month's listings on iicdelhi.in and arrive early for popular concerts, as the main auditorium has only 230 seats.
  • Check which building your event is in: 'IIC main' is at 40 Max Mueller Marg, while the IIC Annexe is a separate building a few minutes' walk along Max Mueller Marg towards Lodhi Road.
  • The IIC Film Club is a society for IIC members, so check a screening's listing before you go; most other talks, films and concerts are open to all.
  • The IIC bar serves only members and residents, so eat beforehand. Khan Market, about 1.5 km away, is the nearest big cluster of cafés and restaurants.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be an IIC member to attend events?

Usually not. IIC says most of its programmes are open to the public without tickets or invitations. Membership matters for facilities such as the bar and for the members-only Film Club.

How do I reach the India International Centre by metro?

The nearest station is Khan Market (Violet Line), about 1.5 km or a 20-minute walk. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Violet Line) and Jor Bagh (Yellow Line) are each about 1.8 km away. An auto or e-rickshaw from the station is the easiest option.

Where is the IIC Annexe?

It is a separate building on Max Mueller Marg, a short walk from the main building towards Lodhi Road. Lecture rooms and the Annexe Court there host many talks and screenings.

Where are concerts held at IIC?

Most are held in the C.D. Deshmukh Auditorium in the main building, which has 230 fixed seats, a stage and a green room. Larger outdoor events use the Fountain Lawn.
