About Akshara Theatre

The Akshara Theatre, formally the Akshara National Classical Theatre, is an independent arts complex on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, next to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Playwright-director Gopal Sharman and actress Jalabala Vaidya founded it and registered it as a society in 1980. They ran it with their daughter Anasuya Vaidya and also lived on the premises. Sharman designed and built the complex himself, decorating it with his own stone carvings, and it is studied by architecture students. It has three theatres, including the outdoor Pipal Tree Theatre, as well as television production studios and a gallery. Sharman's Ramayana production has been staged more than 2,000 times. Akshara has long hosted plays, music, dance and children's summer workshops. It still hosts ticketed plays by visiting groups in 2026.
